What is the lifespan of Astroturf?
The lifespan of artificial grass is lengthening all the time as technology improves, but it does depend to some extent on the climate and the level of wear and tear it receives. Let’s look at each of these in turn.
Artificial grass is great in any climate, which is part of its attraction. There are never periods when your grass is brown and parched during heat waves and hosepipe bans, and neither will you find it waterlogged in winter. Artificial grass will allow rain to seep away just in the way a natural lawn should. In very hot climates artificial grass does not last quite as long as it would in a normal UK climate. In the Middle East and parts of the United States, for example, where artificial turf is widely used, temperatures are extremely high for most of the year. Even with light usage in hotel grounds, for example, artificial grass will degrade in about 9-10 years. Most of the damage comes from the UV rays in the sun. In a UK climate however, astroturf will last from between 10-15 years.
The amount of wear and tear an artificial grass lawn experiences will affect its lifespan. This doesn’t apply to normal domestic wear and tear, such as children’s play. But if you use it for sports areas – football areas or tennis courts – then regular heavy use will shorten the lifespan of the lawn, unless you chose a grass that is specifically suited to that level of traffic.
One way of ensuring your lawn lasts longer is to make sure you choose the right grade of astroturf in the first place. We are more than happy to advise on the best choice of turf for the location and level of use you have in mind. Whether you are an outdoor venue with hundreds of visitors, or a small household with young children, there is a perfect match for you. The best way to make the right choice is to send for one of our sample packs, which will show you the options in your chose budget. We can then discuss your requirements with you to help you make the perfect choice.
Remember, one of the advantages of artificial lawns over natural lawns is the lack of mowing, feeding, aerating and trimming that is needed. The trips to the dump and mower maintenance are a thing of the past. When balanced with the cost of replacement over 10-15 years, most of our customers feel it is a price well worth paying.
